Knowledge needs the wings of confidence and initiative to soar to heights of achievement and to make that dream come true for our younger generations Hong Kong needs people of the will and vision of PATRICK DUNN, CEO of DUNN’S EDUCATION.

Patrick Dunn and Cathleen Luk (CEO and CMO of Dunn’s Education): “This aura of friendliness, fun type of mentoring is a totally welcome, acceptable, enjoyable condition most conducive to the blossoming of undiscovered talent.”

The Hong Kong education system is not perfect. We can criticize it or take the initiative. Patrick Dunn has done just that with the formation of Dunn’s Education, a facility that complements the syllabi in that it goes beyond the book to explore hidden talent, boost confidence and widen horizons.

“We startup sprang from a casual meeting and we discovered that our business partners share the same vision and value. It is an intersection of talent, and each of us has contributed our unique capability in a right place: I’m a gifted public speaker, the administrative supervisor is a master multi-tasker; and the curriculum supervisor is excel at leading the teaching team. All the team players are essential to empower the team,” says Dunn.

Bring out the Best

“Our mission statement is clear and aspirational. Our key objective is to facilitate our children to lead with confidence by enhancing their communication and public speaking skills. In Hong Kong, most of the education centers are result-oriented and focus on academic results. We are creative, inspiring and activity-based. We provide great opportunities for children to perform on stage and encourage them to join different types of contest, such as holding the Hong Kong Little Emcee Contest and Dunn’s Little Star Storytelling Contest every year. We contribute a lot of resources for children to learn and experience outside the classroom,” explains Dunn.

“We offer interactive courses in our centers and also provide courses to local schools. Our curriculum design is up-todate and thematic, our teaching approach has high flexibility to suit learning diversities. Moreover, we value the uniqueness of each child and we value our communication with parents. Teachers are encouraged to communicate with parents periodically after observing and assessing their children. Parents highly appreciated that our teachers are well trained and supportive.”

Beyond the Classroom

Hong Kong’s education system has always focused on its high-stress culture, observes Dunn, adding that students are under severe stress and parents may focus on their academic results rather than all-round development.

“We need to do a lot of parental education to promote the importance of communication, creativity and speaking confidence. We hold different kinds of talks and workshops for both children and parents. On the other hand, we spend a lot of time designing the curriculum and teaching materials in order to arouse children’s learning interest and initiative.

To this end we will continue to expand more centers and also provide more public speaking courses in local kindergarten, primary and secondary schools. We will also further our development in corporate training and etiquette training.”

Into the Future

“Our team is passionate and caring for our children to “Lead with Confidence”. At our facilities, there’s not much employer-employee relationship at all. We all engage and participate as a part of one team. We treat ourselves as leaders rather than as bosses, so all of our contribution is not “teaching” the children, but leading and facilitating them to be confident. This is a significant message we’d like to tell the parents about our brand. We are mentors and not ‘teachers’ in the conventional sense. This aura of friendliness, fun type of mentoring is a totally welcome, acceptable, enjoyable condition most conducive to the blossoming of undiscovered talent. This is our contribution to Hong Kong’s future,” concludes Dunn.
