PETER YAN, Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer, SUNeVision Holdings Ltd speaks on the challenges facing an industry growing faster than its own imagination.

“With the explosive growth of the Internet and following the deregulation of local telecommunications market, SUNeVision saw the strong demand in the Hong Kong market for IT infrastructure and colocation data centers over 15 years ago. Leveraging the extensive property footing of SUNeVision’s controlling shareholder, Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SEHK: 0016), iAdvantage was founded in 2000 offering world-class data center, IP network and managed services for local and international corporations, says Peter Yan, Executive Director & Chief Executive Officer, SUNeVision Holdings Ltd.

Timely, because Asia has emerged to become the driver of global data usage growth.

“The rise of Internet companies and digital savvy consumers in the region, particularly in Mainland China, is a key contributor to this phenomenon. Many technology companies originated in the Mainland are expanding overseas to tap into the Asian and even the global market. This has in turn fuelled strong demands in data center facilities in Hong Kong which serves as a gateway to international markets.” Yan says.

Best-in-Class Service

SUNeVision and its major shareholder have total ownership of all the buildings that house its Data Centers (DCs). Its customers are therefore assured of service longevity. With full control of everything from DC assets, resource management, operations control to facilities management, customer requirements are addressed in a holistic manner.

“With multiple DCs, we offer our customers many choices in terms of location and DC features. For example, for enterprises that would like proximity to CBDs, we have one in Kwun Tong and one in Chai Wan. For customers looking for cost-effectiveness, our sites in Tsuen Wan and Fo Tan are the best choices,” says Yan.

“We are committed to providing carrier-grade infrastructure to all telecom service providers in our DCs. We operate one of the world’s largest carrier hotels with more than 100 carriers in our flagship MEGA-i DC, which has become one of the most critical buildings in Hong Kong. Being the preferred telecom hub, we currently house the Point of Presence (POP) of 9 submarine cables, enabling our customers to connect with all major DCs, carriers, ICPs and ISPs around the globe via fast, secure and diversified links. Our MEGA Connect Services creates a Virtual DC platform that leverages on connectivity between DCs to allow Cloud Service Providers to establish cost-effective Content Delivery Networks (CDNs).

Our premium DCs are built to meet Tier 3+ standards. They are accredited with ISO9001, ISO20000, ISO27001, and ISO14001 Certifications. Our facilities are consistently recognized as secure and reliable for mission-critical data operations in independent TVRA (Threat and Vulnerability Risk Assessment) studies.”

Mega Growth

SUNeVision is not only expanding two of its data centers, MEGA-i in Chai Wan and MEGA Two in Fotan, but also building a flagship data center, MEGA Plus, in Tseung Kwan O. This purpose-built, greenfield data center will provide 470,000 gross square foot data center spaces and 22MW of customer power, expected to be ready for services in mid-2017.

“Our MEGA-i in Chai Wan has evolved into one of the most important carrier hotels in the world, which is a major international telecom hub in the region. Our tenants include all major telecom operators in the world, with more than a hundred and counting. The presence of major national carriers on our premises has also made our DCs a China telecom hub that attracts major technology and trading companies wanting to enter into the Chinese market, or successful Chinese companies wanting to expand their business overseas. We are well positioned to help PRC Cloud Service Providers go global.

We are also taking aggressive steps to establish strategic alliance with overseas local players to compete with international service providers. We will extend our VDC platform to our alliance partners overseas so this Award is timely and a humble reminder to us that success is a continuous journey,” concludes Yan.
